Ingredients

  • 6 medium russet potatoes peeled and sliced thin
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs optional
  • Fresh parsley for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to form a roux.
  • Gradually whisk in the heavy cream and milk, ensuring no lumps. Continue cooking until the sauce thickens.
  • Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, Parmesan, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until smooth and creamy.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the potatoes, then repeat with the remaining potatoes and sauce.
  • (Optional) Sprinkle breadcrumbs on top for a crispy finish.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
  • Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley.

Notes

  • You can use different types of cheese, such as cheddar, mozzarella, or a combination, for added flavor.
  • For a crunchy topping, add breadcrumbs or crushed cornflakes before baking.
  • Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes work best for this recipe due to their starchy texture.
  • You can prepare the dish ahead of time and bake it just before serving.
